Food Waste Diverted by Cal Poly Corporation

According to Jesse Carlon, the custodial supervisor for Cal Poly Corporation, food waste is collected from Campus Dining's main food production areas (main kitchen, salad room, 19 Metro, and VGs). The post-consumer waste at 19 Metro and VGs is collected on conveyor belts and hand sorted as food scraps, recycling, and landfill.

This food waste is then collected from the participating Campus Dining locations daily, stored in a large bin on campus, and is picked up 1-3 times a month by Engel & Gray, Inc., a composting facility in Santa Maria. Below is a graph of Cal Poly's composted waste since May 2009.

  2. A few years ago there was one by the Crops building, just 50ft away from Highland Drive. Its white-grey, about 3 feet tall, and 4 feet square. It usually has oranges, some bell peppers, avocados, and other produce in it from the fields that was discarded for some reason. Its a goldmine!
